The ASU Library Map and Geospatial Hub is excited to host an exhibition of original cartographic artwork by the students in ASU professor Ellen Murray Meissinger’s Art on Paper class. Point of View is the fourth installment in the Creative Cartography collaboration between the Map and Geospatial Hub and the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.
Part of the life cycle of a library is the withdrawal of worn out or excess materials. In 2013 the Map and Geospatial Hub decided to withdraw surplus copies of topographic maps. The resulting stacks of maps were offered to other institutions. A few were claimed but the majority were not.
In 2014 the Hub offered the remaining maps to the School of Art. Meissinger jumped at the offer. She pushed a cart across campus and loaded it up! Viewing this as an opportunity, Meissinger designed a cartographic art assignment for the students in her Art on Paper class. At the end of the Fall 2014 semester, the Hub hosted the first student exhibition, Memories & Movement.
New groups of students in Professor Meissinger's Art on Paper classes extended this collaboration with Order & Chaos (Fall 2015), and Through Space and Time (Fall 2016).
The current exhibit, Point of View, is on display for a limited time, November 13-22, so visit the Map and Geospatial Hub Monday-Friday 9-5 or view the artworks when attending ASU GIS Day 2017.
