Prof. Meissinger and students, Art Building
For four years, Map and Geospatial Hub staff have worked with Ellen Murray Meissinger, professor in the ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, encouraging art students to think about their place in the world by using cartographic materials in their artwork. Some of her students recently led drawing and watercolor workshops using maps withdrawn from the Hub as their canvas.
The “Common Ground” workshop attendees were instructed to choose a topographic map and then create their own artwork on it. Meissinger's students demonstrated some of their own techniques as well. She writes, “The students really liked working on the maps and some will no doubt be over to visit the Hub.”
The Hub has many more withdrawn maps that would love a new home and a new purpose. Drop by during open hours to find one for yourself.
In November, Meissinger's Art on Paper class will exhibit original cartographic artwork in the Map and Geospatial Hub. View student artwork from three previous exhibits at the Creative Cartography library guide.
